Porsche 911 special edition unveiled for 50th anniversary

Porsche is celebrating the golden jubilee of its iconic 911 sports car with the release of a special edition 911 based on the 911 Carrera S, the German-based automaker announced June 3.
Exactly 1,963 of the anniversary edition vehicles will hit dealerships in the fall (to commemorate the car's 1963 debut) with a starting price of $125,050, including destination charges. It is slated to debut in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the same exhibition where the first model launched 50 years ago.
Originally named the "Type 901" and developed as a larger, more powerful successor to the 356, the car became known as the 911 for its market launch in 1964. It featured a 130-horsepower flat-six rear engine and rear wheel-drive.
The forthcoming edition will have a similar engine style, except that it will produce 430 horsepower to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds and top speeds of 186 miles per hour.
The exterior stylings will hark back to bold features from the sports car's 50-year past. They include 20-inch matte black wheels, chrome trim strips, fins on the engine compartment grilles and a two-tone 3D-effect badge on the rear lid with the "911 50" insignia. It'll be available in a light metalic gray, a darker graphite gray and monochrome black. Meanwhile, the leather-draped interior has green labeling on instruments with white pointer needles and silver caps on pivot pins.
