Bordering the Great South Bay, Bay Shore is a large historic hamlet popular for waterfront activities, including boating and fishing. It's also where visitors can catch the Fire Island ferry.

But there's so much more, thanks to ongoing revitalization. Attractions include restaurants, shops and entertainment venues such as the YMCA Boulton Center.

"We have become alive again," says Donna deLuca Periconi, president of the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce. She and the chamber have been working with community and local officials and have used resources such as the national Main Street Alliance model to learn how to bring back a community.

New businesses include Bearfoot Yoga & Wellness Center and the Kildare Academy of Irish Dance. Eagle Golf, an indoor golf club, is opening soon. Courtland Square Commons, a new rental development with 40 Victorian-style town houses, is near completion.

Resident Rick Ramsay of Eric G. Ramsay Jr. Associates in Bay Shore says he has been pleased with the schools for his children and describes the community's sports programs and health-care institutions as top notch.

Economically and ethnically diverse, Bay Shore offers single-family homes, mobile homes, condos, town houses, senior housing, affordable housing and apartments. Single-family homes range from the $200,000s to about $7 million.
