Singer-actress Miley Cyrus, whose engagement to Liam Hemsworth ended earlier this month, now suggests she wanted to break up in February.

In an interview with the Canadian magazine Fashion conducted 10 days after her controversial twerking performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Cyrus, 20, says she wrote her song "Drive" "while I was working on Valentine's Day -- emotionally it was such a hard time. It is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It's a time when you want to leave but you can't. It's also about moving on."

Cyrus and "The Hunger Games" star Hemsworth got engaged in May 2012 after meeting while filming the Nicholas Sparks coming-of-age romantic drama "The Last Song" in 2009.

They broke up in August 2010 but were back together the following month, according to reports at the time. They reportedly split up again that November, but had reconciled by the following spring and soon afterward became engaged.

This past March, Cyrus was denying rumors the engagement was off. In April, however, Cyrus' father, singer-actor Billy Ray Cyrus, said even he was unsure where the couple's relationship stood.

In the interview, Cyrus maintained she was proud of her VMA performance and that MTV censors "cut almost everything I did." She added, "The reaction to what I did has been insane. I think it was a breath of fresh air! For the people that don't get it, you weren't meant to."
