Robin Roberts of 'Good Morning America' comes out as gay, linked to Amber Laign

"Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts has come out publicly as gay.

In a Facebook post Sunday, Roberts, 53, giving a year-end list of things for which she is thankful, wrote, "I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together."

An ABC spokeswoman confirmed to Variety afterward that Roberts has been in a 10-year relationship with Amber Laign, a massage therapist in private practice who specializes in helping patients recover from injuries.

Roberts and Laign, who is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, had met through mutual friends, the spokeswoman added.

Mediabistro.com said Roberts has been out to her family, friends and co-workers for years, but had never publicly revealed her sexual orientation.

The acknowledgment came as part of a longer post about her progress following a bone-marrow transplant Roberts received in September 2012 to combat the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS.

"Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today when I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post-transplant [and my dog] KJ was finally allowed to come back home."

She added, "At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude," she wrote. "I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann [Roberts], for being my donor and giving me the gift of life."

Her "GMA" colleague, weather forecaster Sam Champion, who left the show early this month to become The Weather Channel's managing editor, publicly came out as gay in October 2012.
