Movie buzz: The royal 'W.E.' trailer
WHO Madonna
THE MOVIE "W.E."
THE DEAL The Weinstein Co. has released an official trailer for this period piece, directed and co-written by Madonna. A historical romance between Britain's King Edward VIII and American socialite Wallis Simpson (a scandal referred to in "The King's Speech"), the movie was largely trashed by critics after its Venice Film Festival premiere; opinions ranged from "uninvolving" to "extraordinarily silly." The film has been publicized as Madonna's directing debut, though that's overlooking her universally panned first feature, "Filth and Wisdom," in 2008. "W.E." is scheduled for release Dec. 9.
THE DEAL Freeport archivist Bill Shelley returns with another collection of little-seen concert clips and performance footage, this time focusing on the enduringly groovy San Francisco acid heads. The clips come mostly from the 1970s and have been restored from 16 mm film and 3/4-inch video. Included in the compilation, which runs more than two hours, are performances of "Uncle John's Band," "Ripple" and "The Music Never Stopped."
INFO Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Tickets are $13. 800-838-3006; cinemaartscentre.org.
WHO Martin Scorsese
THE MOVIE "The Snowman"
THE DEAL With his young-adult fantasy, "Hugo," currently in theaters, the director is returning to the crime genre with an adaptation of Jo Nesbo's bestselling novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Scorsese reportedly confirmed the news to a Swedish newspaper. The book is about an Oslo detective, Harry Hole, who is tracking Norway's first official serial killer. Matthew Michael Carnahan ("State of Play") is set to write the script.
