Calling all would-be Mavericks: Your favorite movie, "Top Gun," is back.

Digitally remastered for its 25th anniversary, "Top Gun" will screen Saturday and Monday at various AMC Loews theaters around the country, including two on Long Island. Free commemorative posters will be distributed while supplies last.

Released in mid-May of 1986, "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer as Navy fighter pilots and Kelly McGillis as a brainy-but-beautiful instructor, became one of the most widely panned, globally adored and much-discussed movies in history. Critics blasted it as pro-military propaganda, even as audiences sent ticket sales into the stratosphere. And while "Top Gun" seemed aggressively heterosexual, it became famous for a shirtless volleyball sequence that struck even casual viewers as blatantly homoerotic. Years later, the world would learn that Cruise's love interest in the movie, McGillis, was a lesbian.

All of which has only boosted the film's stock over the years. "Top Gun" remains a cult favorite, a campy laughathon, a perverse cultural text and, of course, a plain-old good time.
