Tommy Keys' LI blues: Made in the shade

Blues artist Tommy Keys plays Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Great River, July 31, 2011.
WHAT Tommy Keys brings his barrelhouse boogie-and-blues piano to a shady spot at the arboretum for a matinee concert, part of an Islip Arts Council series. A member of the Long Island Blues Society, Keys will accompany his own soulful vocals in his band's version of foot-stomping New Orleans jazz. His latest CD is "The Man in the Moon." Bring a chair or blanket if you like, but you're likely to find yourself on your feet, swaying to the beat.

Art: Andrea Kowch show in Sag Harbor
WHAT Paintings by Andrea Kowch featured in this month's cover story of American Art Collector bring an eerie vision to the East End gallery scene. Using Middle America as her muse, Kowch, who grew up in Michigan, draws the history of a particular place -- invariably rural -- to the surface as it collides with a new reality in layers of metaphor and moodiness. The faces of her women may remind you of characters in a Tim Burton film. "The real and unreal, history and the present, opposing emotions, endings and beginnings, nature's seasons and cycles . . . is present at the core of my work," Kowch says. "It's my past and my present magically fused." Nature painting by Kevin Sloan accompany the Kowch show.
