"American Idol" stylists seem to have gone on a madcap jacket-shopping spree for Wednesday night’s show.  Five out of the seven remaining contestants wore one kind or another and the array was rather astounding.

Weirdest, though most dramatic, was rocker James Durbin’s topper – a kooky-mean, circus ringmaster affair featuring epaulets, yarn fringe and metallic hoops worn over another padded military jacket, and jodhpurs stuffed into combat boots.  The ensemble prompted wild child Steven Tyler  to say, “You stay out of my closet, man. It’s Mad Max meets Storm Troopers.”

The shleppy award of the night has to go to Casey Abrams, admire him as we do (heck, he kissed the "World’s Most Beautiful Woman").  An Army green rumpled jacket topped an untucked plaid shirt and shlumpy cargo pants . . . but he was great!

Jacob Lusk is always a bit more formal than the rest, last night his shiny sharkskin suit featuring black piping on the jacket lapels was his nod to old school elegance. Very neat.

Too neat perhaps, Scotty McCreery whose caramel leather jacket matched (almost exactly) is caramel cowboy boots – too matchy-matchy?

Even Steven Tyler was in a jacket sort of mood.  His was a juicy plum leather job, which clashed a bit with the ruby red kiss mark on his face delivered, he said, by daughter Mia.

Unfortunately, though we are big Haley Reinhart fans, her demure red polka dotted retro dress seemed at odds with her song and her gutsy style. (Maybe she should have worn a jacket?)

And Stefano Langone wore a Broadway-esque strutting costume -- a black and gray dancer get-up with red suspenders hanging down, and matching red soled sneaks.

Of course the real fashion plate of the night was Jennifer Lopez who donned a coppery paillette-laden tap short and top ensemble (the loose silk sparkle box shape tee is from Madewell, according to InStyle), amped up with huge gold and crushed diamond earrings by fab jeweler Loren Ridinger. Gorgeous!
