NBC has shipped out a fairly meaty first look at Howard Stern on "America's Got Talent," and no need to read my rattling about it — head straight to the clip. But my initial read (and everyone has a first impression don't they?) is not all that good. Howard looks like he's bought into the program, and you don't see — at least in these three plus minutes — the zap, zing and sting that I fully expect him to bring. I actually think Stern was an inspired match for this show, but I also suspect that SiriusXM .?.?. his years out of the spotlight .?.?. and the fact that he no longer (even remotely) commands center stage, as he once so volubly did .?.?. has mellowed the dude.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope he sets this cheesefest in the right direction — whatever "right" is when it comes to something like "AGT" is. But if he becomes just another voice alongside Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandell then this will be a huge waste.

OK, I've rattled, and best not to judge a promotional clip .?.?. Show returns May 14:
