The History Channel has a gobsmack of a hit on its hands: "Hatfields & McCoys."

Awaiting official release from the network, but the twittersphere says the miniseries, which launched Monday night, was seen by well over 13 million viewers, or to be exact, 13.9 million.

That's a huge figure even for ESPN and if it stands is probably a record for basic cable entertainment programming.

The mini got reasonably good reviews - though I was down on it for any number of reasons, most of them bloody.

Nevertheless, this was a smart move by History: It knew a lot of people would be shopping for something to watch after  the long weekend, and Kevin Costner stepped into the breach, all guns blazing.
