The man sure can pick ‘em — any other night for an alfresco fashion show would’ve been hot and sticky, but the humidity finally broke on Sunday, just hours before Tommy Hilfiger transformed a section of the historic High Line into his own beachy boardwalk, complete with cabana and scores of lanterns hanging from above, swaying in the breeze.

With a nautical journey in mind, Hilfiger stuck to what he’s been doing so well in recent seasons — a preppified collection of classics (twill shorts, cable cardis, office-ready blazers and shirtdresses), infused with enough sophistication and a few surprises to keep things interesting.

Surprises here included quilted leather and suede moto jackets with racing stripes down one side; a red, white and blue shirtdress with large box pleat unzipped in back;and a sack dress made of extra-large cable knit, and gathered at the bottom into a wide hem.

Several pieces were carried over from his menswear line, including a striped cardigan, slouchy rope-print suit and Breton-stripe shirts.

Of course, any Hilfiger boardwalk must lead to the beach. So there was swimwear, and a fun take on a boat shoe — multicolored, with stacked white heel. That’ll remind you it’s summer, no matter how many times you get to the beach.
