Fat Boy's Burrito Co. expands to Patchogue
Food service life seemed predestined for brothers Tony and Sam Othman, who grew up in and around their parents’ deli business. Now their third location of Fat Boy’s Burrito Co. has opened in Patchogue, serving overstuffed, wacky-combination burritos.
The menu — which is shared by the chainlet’s other locations in Bellmore and East Northport — may be intimidating to first-timers. Loaded with more than 40 burrito combinations, 20 quesadillas and nearly 25 tacos, it may take a few minutes to digest. But repeat customers quickly settle on favorites that roll off their tongue when ordering. Servings are intentionally oversize.
"We said, ‘let’s give it a fun, catchy name and increase the portion sizes,’ " co-owner Tony Othman said. "We always wanted our guests to take home the other half."
Othman said the most popular menu item is Fat Fat Boy Burrito ($17) filled to the brim with steak, pulled pork carnitas, diced bacon, potato tots, rice, rajas, cheese and jalapeños. Also popular: the Fat Hawaiian ($17) made with marinated steak, grilled pineapple shrimp, rice, arugula, salsa fresca, onion strings and cilantro. In keeping with the theme, the Fat Bang Bang is loaded with Thai chili-glazed crispy shrimp, the Fat Fish has beer battered cod and the Fat Scramble is egg-based. Add-ons range from mozzarella sticks to bacon, guacamole, onion strips and Flamin’ Hot Crunchy Cheetos.
Everything gets doused in peachy-colored Fat Boy sauce, a "secret recipe" chipotle mayo that is also sold in Mason jars for $10. Solid vegetarian options include a quesadilla with chipotle barbecued jackfruit and cheese ($12).
Sides and snacks range from wings ($10), nachos, smothered tots and fries, street corn ($5) and mac and cheese that has a hint of spice from jalapeño oil ($10). With a full liquor license, Fat Boy's serves a range of tropical drinks and tequilas, plus a selection of American, Mexican and craft beers.
As for that catchy name? "Oh, it speaks to your inner fat boy," Othman said. "And we all have one of those."
