First bites: Turkuaz, Riverhead

The word "idyllic" just about describes a recent lunch I had on the porch of the new Turkuaz Grill, in view of the Peconic River in Riverhead, a few steps from Atlantis Marine World.
The former digs of Hizir Baba now has a fresh contemporary look and a similar menu of Turkish comfort classics. To start: a vibrant shepherd’s salad and fiery plate of acili ezme, minced vegetables with walnuts and what the menu calls “hot spices.” Then an enormous (and exemplary) Iskender kebab, house-made doner kebab (gyro) served over pide bread and topped with tomato sauce, yogurt and hot butter sauce.
Also delectable: A pepperoni pide (similar to pizza) with Turkish mozzarella. No tomato sauce, though.
Turkuaz is at 40 McDermott Ave., Riverhead, 631-591-1757.
