A New Jersey chain has established a beachhead in Suffolk: Long Island’s first Jersey Mike’s Subs has opened in Commack.
The Manasquan-based chain with more than 1,000 outposts nationwide has built a reputation on its hot and cold subs dressed “Mike’s Way,” with onions, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and oregano, finished with a mixture of red wine vinegar and olive oil. There’s an option for a cherry pepper relish add-on.
Provolone, ham and capicola comprise the signature “Jersey Shore Favorite,” ($6.25) while hot subs include Philly cheesesteaks, meatball sandwiches, chicken parm and pastrami Reuben (all start at $7.45).
Jersey Mike’s started in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, with Peter Cancro buying the place from the shop’s third owner in the 1970s. Still the CEO, Cancro started franchising the restaurant in 1987. By 2014 there were 750 locations. Last year alone, the brand opened nearly 200 locations.
The Commack franchise is owned by John Walsh, with partners Susan Daly and Nicki Gingola. More locations, owned by other franchisees, are in the offing, with Uniondale scheduled for November and Hauppauge scheduled for December.
