Another Long Island diner has fallen by the wayside. The Lindencrest Diner, which has been a fixture of the South Shore community of Lindenhurst since 1985, has closed.

A sign posted on the front door cites "economic hardships" in the decision to pack up shop after 39 years.

"We will truly miss all the familiar, happy faces that made this establishment a huge part of our lives and family. Once again, we are sorry, and you all will be missed," the sign reads.

Although the door is locked, the tables remain set with condiments. But the diner's Facebook page has been taken down. The diner's phone number plays a recorded message: "After 39 years of serving our community, we are saddened to announce that we will be closing our doors. Thank you for your loyalty and support over the years."

The diner, on a busy stretch of Montauk Highway, had also cut back its hours recently, nixing dinner and operating from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day.

While many Long Island diners have adapted to today's fierce economic climate by embracing social media trends and nostalgic fare like boozy milkshakes, The Lindencrest Diner maintained a traditional approach. Its menu was expansive and included classic fare like country omelets, pastrami sandwiches, patty melts and Greek gyros and souvlaki.

Several Long Island diners have closed or pivoted their business in recent years, including the Mediterranean Diner in Bellmore and The Lantern Diner in West Hempstead. The Seven Seas Diner in Great Neck pivoted to a Greek restaurant concept last year but has since closed again.
