Mizu Japanese Sushi opens in Farmingdale

Pad thai has left the building (or rather, the Melville Road strip mall across from Farmingdale State College) and ramen has taken its place. Sushi remains, though, and in force.

Mizu Japanese Sushi has opened in the storefront where Auspicious used to be. That Thai-sushi fusion business closed last fall; before that, Mojo Taco occupied the spot.

Mizu’s décor takes its cues from the gastropub playbook with rustic wood walls, exposed pipework and hanging Edison bulbs. The menu, though, is primarily Japanese, with an ample supply of sashimi, nigiri sushi and specialty rolls, plus hibachi, udon and six types of ramen, including a corn version loaded with roast pork and fish cakes.

Hints of fusion still linger, though: wonton soup and dumplings join a roster of Japanese apps like tempura, shumai and deep-fried soft shell crab. The kitchen also turns out Chinese stir-fries like sesame chicken and orange beef. Prices range from $5 (for some appetizers) to $30 (for a loaded hibachi plate) with specialty rolls priced between $10 and $15, and most ramen costing around $11.

Though Mizu’s takeout menu advertises beer and wine, an employee said the restaurant is still awaiting its license to serve alcohol.
