A Bellport man has been indicted, charged with second-degree murder, after authorities said he plunged a crowbar into the head of a man last month in East Patchogue — killing him in an attack witnessed by the victim’s daughter.
In a statement Tuesday, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced the indictment against Darrell Trent, 46, saying he was arrested by law enforcement in Shaker Heights, Ohio, five days after the attack, which took place on May 18 at about 2:45 a.m.
The district attorney’s office said the incident began with a verbal dispute between victim Carlos Bonaparte, 45, of East Patchogue, and a cousin of his girlfriend's that escalated when the cousin called Trent to the scene. Authorities said Trent arrived at the home, exiting his vehicle with "what appeared to be a crowbar" — then "intentionally plunged" it into the victim's head, killing him.
Bonaparte was transported to NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Trent is due in court on July 2.
"This violent attack was allegedly committed in front of Mr. Bonaparte’s young child," Tierney said in a statement. "Such acts of violence have no place in our community."
