A Bay Shore man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle crashed with and seriously injured a motorcyclist in Bay Shore Sunday, Suffolk police said.
John Hernandez-Hernandez, 21, was driving a 2014 Chrysler 300 north on Fifth Avenue at 8:20 p.m. when he attempted to make a turn on Fairtown Road, causing a southbound 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle to crash into his vehicle, Suffolk police said.
The motorcyclist, a 32-year-old Central Islip woman, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.
Hernandez-Hernandez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He pleaded not guilty Monday at his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip and remained jailed without bail, according to court records. He is scheduled to return to court May 7.
In a phone interview, Jeremy James Scileppi of Commack, Hernandez-Hernandez's defense attorney, said his client "feels bad about the person who hit his car. He stopped to render aid and fully cooperated with the police investigation."
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
