Two Nassau County men were held without bail Wednesday in connection with an October double shooting that killed one man in Hempstead Village, authorities said.

Jamik Q. Cannon, 26, of Linden Place in Hempstead, and Brian Marquis Marshall Gibson, 23, of Kingston Avenue in South Floral Park, were arraigned before Nassau County District Court Judge Elizabeth Fox-McDonough in Hempstead.

Cannon and Gibson were each charged with second-degree murder of Demetrius Winfield, 30, of Hempstead, and the second-degree attempted murder of Johnny Vannable, 33, also of Hempstead.

The suspects were assigned public defenders and are due back in court Friday.

The men fired multiple shots from a handgun at Winfield and Vannable at about 11 a.m. on Oct. 19 on Wellesley Street, police said.

Winfield was pronounced dead of wounds to his torso half an hour later at a hospital, while Vannable survived gunshot wounds to his lower extremities, police said.

The double shooting refocused attention on crime in the village.

The week before, Jeffrey Lee, 23, of Roosevelt, was shot several times and killed near a Hempstead preschool program at Dartmouth Street and Stewart Avenue. Police said the shooting started as a fight among other males.

The double shooting was a block from the Dartmouth home of 12-year-old Dejah Joyner, who was fatally struck in 2015 by a stray bullet that came through the window as she was eating dinner.
