Quay Sean Hines convicted of murder in 2022 shooting of Amelia Laguerre in New Hyde Park office garage

A Bay Shore man accused of fatally shooting his former fiancee in 2022 at the New Hyde Park medical office where she worked was convicted of second-degree murder and other crimes on Thursday, Nassau District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding Quay Sean Hines, 33, guilty in the death of Amelia Laguerre. Laguerre, who was 33 and the mother of a young son, had worked for Northwell Health for 10 years before she was gunned down in her office’s underground garage, Donnelly said.

Hines is scheduled to return to acting State Supreme Court Justice Robert Bogle’s courtroom for sentencing on Oct. 29. Hines faces a maximum punishment of 40 years to life in prison. His attorneys, Scott Gross and Gregory Zak, did not immediately return requests for comment.

Hines and Laguerre had a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship before Laguerre decided to end it for good, according to Donnelly. Nassau police said immediately after the slaying that Hines had become abusive to his former fiancee. He also was accused of breaking into her apartment and burning her clothes. Police said Hines was obsessed with getting back together with Laguerre and had stalked her at work.

Hines entered the underground garage of Northwell Health’s Marcus Avenue office in the late afternoon of March 31, 2022, with a loaded firearm and shot Laguerre nine times before fleeing the scene, authorities said. Officers responded to a call of shots fired, and Laguerre was transported to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where she was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

“The defendant crept up behind Amelia in the parking garage of her place of work and sadistically shot her nine times all over her body, fatally lodging a bullet in her heart,” Donnelly said. “This senseless, horrific act cost a young woman her life and denied her eight-year-old son the chance to grow up with his mother’s love and care.”

Hines was arrested on April 8, 2022, in Merrick by members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Bureau of Special Operations and Homicide Squad.

His trial began on Sept. 9, according to prosecutors. The jury also convicted him of two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Northwell Health added touchless metal detectors at its offices in New Hyde Park and medical centers in Bay Shore and New York City after Laguerre’s slaying and a February 2022 incident at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens. An East Rockaway man was charged in connection with threats he allegedly made against his wife while she held their toddler at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Police found a large cache of weapons and ammunition at his home, officials said.
