Man charged in Garden City, Hempstead burglaries, cops say
Police responding to an alarm Sunday afternoon in Garden City arrested an 18-year-old man, charging him in a string of residential burglaries and attempted burglaries in the area.
Dimas Yanez, who has no known address, was arrested by Garden City police officers, who had responded to the alarm call on St. James Street South, Nassau County police said in a news release.
Police said the officers who responded to the 2:30 p.m. call were told by a witness that Yanez was seen on the roof of a residence on St. James Street South — but had fled.
Police said Yanez was located “in the area” a short time later.
An investigation then connected him to five other burglaries and attempted burglaries of residences stretching back to last month, according to police.
Those incidents took place on Sept. 8 and twice on Saturday, all on Third Street in Garden City, and on Sept. 10 on St. James Street South in Garden City and Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead, police said.
Police did not say what was taken in the burglaries.
The charges against Yanez include two counts of second-degree burglary and four counts of second-degree attempted burglary. At his arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead, Yanez was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond, which court records indicate was not posted.
Records indicate he is due back in court Wednesday.
