Alleged Mastic Beach gang member sentenced for fatal shooting, robbery
An alleged gang member from Mastic Beach has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a man outside a Farmingville nightclub and the robbery of ridesharing driver, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney announced Wednesday.
David Trent, 19, was among 18 defendants Newsday previously reported were indicted in December 2022 following a law enforcement investigation into the street gang, "No Fake Love," also referred to as "NFL."
On Dec. 5, 2021, Trent and others were engaged in an argument with Jorge Mauricio Sevilla Barrera and his friends in the parking lot outside the Minx Nightclub in Farmingville, Tierney said in a news release. After the altercation became physical, Trent retrieved a firearm and shot Barrera, according to the release. He and another associate then kicked Barrera while he was down before Trent shot him again. Barrera died of his wounds.
After Trent and his associates entered their vehicle and began fleeing the scene, he "leaned out of the window and fired multiple shots," which Tierney said left two additional victims with nonfatal injuries.
Several months later, on April 13, 2022, Trent and a pair of coconspirators, Shati Roy, Jr. and Corey Foggy, ordered a Lyft rideshare car to a Wading River destination, the district attorney said. After they were picked up and on the road, Roy repeatedly struck the driver while he and Trent held him at gunpoint and stated, "Shoot him! Get out of the car," according to the release. Meanwhile, authorities said, Foggy exited the vehicle and forcibly pulled the driver out of his seat and onto the ground. Roy then hopped behind the wheel and fled with Trent, according to Tierney.
A dashboard camera, which Roy "ripped out" and threw onto the road, was recovered. Tierney said the camera captured the entirety of the incident. Both Roy and Foggy pleaded guilty for their roles in the incident, he said.
Christopher Gioe, the Hauppauge-based defense attorney representing Trent, was not immediately available for comment Wednesday evening.
On Sept. 30, Trent pleaded guilty before Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony S. Senft Jr. to one count of first-degree manslaughter, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of first-degree robbery and one count of third-degree grand larceny.
Senft sentenced Trent to 28 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision on Wednesday, the district attorney said.
