A verbal clash between "two groups of females" in North Amityville led to a 16-year-old girl getting shot in the leg Wednesday evening, Suffolk police said.

The two groups were arguing on Cahill Street when one of the females fired a handgun at approximately 8:35 p.m., police said.

"Everyone involved in the dispute, except the victim, fled the scene before police arrived," the police said in a statement.

The victim, who is from North Amityville, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
