The man found dead on a Brentwood street this week has been identified, but Suffolk police have not found a family member to tell them of his slaying, officials said Friday.

Detectives have sought the help of the El Salvador consulate in Central Islip for help finding a relative in that country to inform them of his homicide, said Suffolk police Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky. Police are withholding his name until his family is told of his death.

The 40-year-old victim, a pizza shop kitchen worker who lived in Brentwood, was walking alone on Nimitz Avenue between Bradley and Merrill streets early Thursday when he was hit repeatedly in the head with a blunt object.

A passing motorist spotted his body lying against the curb at 6:12 a.m. and called 911. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe the attack occurred between 4 and 6 a.m. Detectives are seeking witnesses to the attack, which occurred on a residential street.

"The circumstances around his death are unclear," Pelkofsky said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS or the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392. All calls are confidential.
