Cops: Suspect in killing on Shinnecock reservation extradited from North Carolina
The suspect in the August killing of a man on the Shinnecock reservation is being held in Suffolk County jail after his extradition from North Carolina, where he was charged with breaking into a vehicle, New York State Police said in a statement.
Michael Gaines, 42, who has a Goldsboro, North Carolina address, is expected to be arraigned on murder and burglary charges on Thursday or Friday, police said.
The victim, Mtundo Vanterpool, 43, lived on the Shinnecock reservation in Southampton but was not a member. He was fatally shot at about 5:35 a.m. on Aug. 16, police said.
Gaines was arrested six days later in Bethel, North Carolina. He was charged with felony breaking and entering, and deputies then discovered that New York State Police wanted to question him in connection with the shooting of Vanterpool, authorities said.
