A Roslyn student is bringing his love of robotics to at-risk children.

Daniel Flyer, a junior at Roslyn High School, recently developed and taught a pilot robotics program for the after school tutorial program at the Woman’s Opportunity Rehabilitation Center in Hempstead, a community correction program that offers an alternative to incarceration programs for female offenders in and around Nassau County.

The pilot program, held during the spring semester for three students, focused on teaching youngsters hands-on building and coding techniques using VEX IQ robotics kits. Flyer worked with teenage children of previously incarcerated women, he said.

"When I realized that the kids at WORC didn’t have the types of opportunities available to them that the kids in Roslyn do, I wanted to share my passion and knowledge with them," Flyer, 16, said. "I am currently teaching them alone, but in the future I might reach out to other students to grow the program."

Flyer's other robotics achievements include being a founding member and current vice president of his school’s Robotics Club, which placed second last school year in the VEX Robotics Competition at Adelphi University.

He is also the vice president of his school’s math team, secretary of Quiz Bowl, junior captain of Science Olympiad, a member of the code club, and low brass captain of the marching band.
