Medical examiner investigating death of Selden student, 10

Tests done on the body of a 10-year-old boy who died unexpectedly on Wednesday do not show a public health risk, according to Suffolk County health officials.

The child's parents found him unresponsive at their home early Wednesday morning. He was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Preliminary tests completed Wednesday and Thursday did not indicate there is a public health concern, according to the health department. More tests were being done.

The child was a fourth-grader at New Lane Elementary School in Selden, part of the Middle Country Central School District. A message to parents was posted Wednesday on the district website.

"Although we have not been given a cause of death or any other information, there are many rumors surrounding this very sad situation that are, at this time, unfounded," principal Diane Trupia wrote.

The district provided a statement Wednesday saying that counselors would be available at the school and encouraged parents to speak to their children about the death.

"The Middle Country Central School District's New Lane Elementary School is devastated about the tragic loss of a fourth-grade student," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family and friends during this difficult time."
