Girl, 14, dies of injuries from Elmont house fire, police say
A 14-year-old girl has died of her injuries from an Elmont house fire Saturday morning, Nassau County police said Monday.
"The 14-year-old female victim has succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff," police said in a release in which she was identified as Rifat Ali.
Police did not say when Rifat died.
The fire in the house on Marshall Street was reported just before 6 a.m. Saturday. Police and firefighters rescued and performed lifesaving measures on Rifat, an 82-year-old man, and a 75-year-old woman.
Two other men, one 17 and the other 30, escaped out a second-floor window, police said.
The teen had been in critical condition when she was rescued from the home, as was the 82-year-old man, police said Sunday. The 17-year-old and the 75-year-old were in stable condition, police said.
Two Nassau police officers suffered smoke inhalation and two firefighters were treated and released.
The 82-year-old man remains in serious condition, said Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro, adding that the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Multiple fire department responded to the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the house.
