Maguire, senior fellow at the Institute for Democratic Renewal and SUNY Old Westbury president from 1970 to 1981, told students: "You, we, all of us must find and nurture our productive, cooperative, compassionate and caring selves. We have to begin with the task of remaking ourselves, turning away from competition to cooperation . . . We must become the very change we increasingly yearn to see."
