‘Baywatch,’ The Weeknd prompt Herricks promposals
Students at Herricks High School in New Hyde Park are no exception to the trend of seniors racking their brains to raise the bar on promposals.
The Class of 2017 celebrated its prom on June 15 at Carlyle on the Green in Farmingdale -- after offering up a trio of promposals that would give any high school a run for its money.
Ashwin Palaniappan, a senior who will enter Brown University in the fall, and Setu Mehta, who is headed to Harvard, “promposed” to each other earlier this spring.
“I wanted to do something small originally, but it ended up turning into something a lot bigger,” said Mehta. She had spelled out “Prom?” with tennis balls as Palaniappan’s friends gave him flowers on the way down the stairs to the tennis courts.
A little more than a month later, Palaniappan set up a scavenger hunt around New Hyde Park for Mehta, which involved stops at the movie theater, Panera Bread and his date’s house.
“I always wanted to do it,” he said about promposing, so Mehta’s doing it first didn’t deter him. “She deserved it, so why not?”
Taking an even more unconventional approach, Brandon Gosine put his promposal on the big screen, asking Shreeya Surapaneni after watching the movie "Baywatch" on June 1. To organize it, he simply asked the AMC theater at Roosevelt Field mall to play a video after the credits, which he had made along with Surapaneni’s friends, and the theater obliged.
The video shows Gosine ringing the doorbells of Surapaneni’s friends, asking them for help with something as they head to the movie theater. At the end of the video, Gosine walked into the theater to ask Surapaneni to prom.
“I kind of had an idea he was going to do it, but I didn’t know how,” Surapaneni said, laughing. “I didn’t know why everyone was making me stay after the credits.”
Justin Joseph took it to the next level when he promposed to Halla Park at the recent The Weeknd concert at the renovated Nassau Coliseum. The night of the concert, Park and two of her friends arrived early, and were standing outside waiting for Joseph and their other friends to arrive -- or so she thought.
As it turned out, Joseph and his friends were already there, and came out of their hiding spots, each holding up a sign with a letter on it.
“My friends and I stayed up for four extra hours one night,” Joseph explained. “The Weeknd has four albums released, so for the letters P-R-O-M, we made each letter an album cover.”
A popular Weeknd fanpage, @abelsxogirll, which The Weeknd himself follows, posted the promposal on its Instagram story. The Weeknd viewed the story, and the fanpage let Joseph know.
“I went crazy,” Joseph said. “It took a really long time [to prepare], but it was all worth it in the end because she really liked it.”
