Cops: Mom, son arrested after he buys gun from teen

A mother and son from Brookville were arrested and charged with weapon possession Tuesday, hours after a 16-year-old boy was arrested on handgun and drug charges while walking on a street in New Cassel, Nassau County police said.

Police said Third Precinct police officers stopped Ryan P. Oliverio, 16, of 5 Hunters Lane, Levittown, near the intersection of Frost Street and Old Country Road after they saw "what appeared to be a handgun sticking out of his pocket" at about 5:15 p.m. During the ensuing investigation, police said they recovered a loaded .380-caliber handgun -- and 18 bags containing a substance "believed to be marijuana."

Police said Oliverio also told officers that he had sold a .32-caliber handgun to a 17-year-old on Feb. 8. That suspect was identified as David J. Yablans, 17, of 1610 Old Cedar Swamp Rd., Brookville, police said.

Officers then went to the Yablans residence, where they said the 17-year-old admitted to having the gun -- but said his mother, Linda, 51, had taken it away from him and placed it in a safe.

Linda Yablans showed the officers where the illegal handgun was kept and opened the safe so those officers could recover the weapon, police said.

But, police said that "upon opening the safe" Linda Yablans "failed to follow orders not to touch any contents" -- and said the woman "lunged forward and grabbed the handgun," causing a struggle.

Yablans and her son were then arrested at 9:40 p.m.

Oliverio was arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree sale of a firearm and fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, police said. He was released after posting a $2,500 cash bail.

David Yablans and his mother were both charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and police said, Linda Yablans was also charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

Linda Yablans was arraigned Wednesday and released on her own recognizance. Arraignment information on her son was not immediately available Wednesday.
