A Westbury firefighter was treated at a hospital and released after suffering eye irritation fighting an early morning fire in New Cassel on Thursday, Nassau County police said.

The volunteer, whose name was not released, got smoke in his eyes during the fire on Longfellow Avenue, police said. No one else was injured.

The fire was reported in a 911 call at 2:06 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
