Glen Cove's Morgan Park reopens to public

A lower area of Morgan Memorial Park reopened Sunday after public works officials cleared it of tree debris from a storm Wednesday that flattened the park's iconic gazebo, Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi said.

Sunday night's summer music festival performance, a salute to the classic rock band The Eagles, took place as scheduled in the lower park.

Although the beach and lower park are open to the public, the upper park area -- where the storm destroyed the 80-year-old gazebo -- is still closed because of tree damage that Suozzi said will take a week to clear.

Employees of the Glen Cove and Nassau County public works departments, and Morgan Park crew members have been "working on the park day and night since the storm," Suozzi said. "All in all, about 36 trees have come down or need to be taken down."

Suozzi said after the storm that the city would rebuild the structure he called "the heart and soul" of Glen Cove. Wednesday's storm left its copper canopy largely undamaged.The gazebo has been the centerpiece of Morgan Park since 1932, when financier J.P. Morgan Jr. built the park to honor his late wife.
