Police: Freeport man arrested after trying to flee traffic stop

Nassau County police arrested a Freeport man Saturday after he allegedly fled from police during a traffic stop.

Officers initated a traffic stop after they observed the driver of a 2009 Nissan Altima attempt to make a right turn onto Hempstead Turnpike from a left-turn-only lane on School Road in Elmont just before noon Saturday. During the police investigation, Jabori Gibson, 27, of Casino Street in Freeport, fled in his vehicle, police said. 

Attempting to flee officers, Gibson drove south on Terrace Avenue, a dead-end street. He turned his vehicle around and hit a parked vehicle and a police car, causing front-end damage to all three autos. 

Gibson then headed east on Hempstead Turnpike until he hit a utility pole and came to a stop against a stone wall, police said. He fled on foot and was located after a brief search in a yard on Meacham Avenue, they said.

Gibson was taken into custody without further incident, police said. There were no injuries reported.

Gibson has been charged with third-degree criminal mischief, two counts of reckless endangerment in the second degree, unlawful fleeing of a police officer in the third degree, second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation  and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. He also had an open warrant from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead at a later date, police said.
