No new clues in deadly Taconic Parkway crash

The brother of the West Babylon driver in the deadly Taconic State Parkway crash last week did not have any more information for investigators Saturday about what happened before the accident.

Warren Hance, of Floral Park, was the last adult known to have spoken with his sister, Diane Schuler, 36, minutes before she drove onto the Taconic last Sunday with her daughter and son and Hance's three daughters.

Hance spoke with investigators late Friday at the Westchester Medical Center, where Schuler's 5-year-old son, Bryan, the lone survivor of the crash, continues to recuperate, said State Police Investigator Shannon Morrison.

"The interview really didn't give us anything new," Morrison said. "Basically we're waiting for the accident reconstruction [report] and the toxicology."

Morrison said he was not authorized to release details of Hance's interview.

The inspection of the two destroyed vehicles is ongoing, Morrison said, and the reports could be done as soon as a week.

Last Sunday at 1:02 p.m., Hance received a phone call from Schuler, apparently made from a pull-off area near the Tappan Zee Bridge, where Schuler's phone was later found.

During that call, she told her brother she was disoriented and having problems seeing. Hance also spoke briefly with his daughter Emma, who said they were near the bridge, according to State Police.

Hance said he asked his sister to wait for him. He and others then called officials and asked them to look for the red Ford Windstar minivan Schuler was driving.

A short time later, Schuler drove onto the Taconic via an exit ramp.

After traveling 1.7 miles, she collided head-on with an SUV. Schuler was killed, along with her daughter, Erin, 2, and Hance's daughters Emma, 8, Alyson, 7, and Kate, 5. Three men from Yonkers in the SUV also died: Daniel Longo, 74; Michael Bastardi, 81; and Guy Bastardi, 49.
