One baby osprey on the mend after crash sent nest to the ground in Bayville

A baby osprey, in rehab after its nest was knocked from a pole in a Bayville motor-vehicle accident Wednesday, has been treated for a broken wing and is now noshing on small minnows, said Jim Jones, board member with Volunteers for Wildlife.
On antibiotics and painkiller, the creature "is not out of the woods, but so far so good," Jones said of the osprey, being cared for at Volunteers for Wildlife Hospital and Education Center, located at the Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley.
The accident on Bayville Road at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday sent the nest to the ground, where it was found to contain three baby ospreys by Nassau County police Second Precinct officers, a Nassau medical technician and members of the Bayville Fire Department.
One of the babies died from the impact and a second who survived the fall died of internal injuries, Jones said.
