A 22-year-old man, standing on a corner in Hempstead, was approached by a group of male assailants Monday night who demanded money from him -- then beat him and shot him when he refused, police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called "non-life-threatening" injuries.

The assailants, a group of three or four males described as being about 20 years old, fled the scene on foot.

Nassau County police said the assault occurred at about 9:50 p.m. at the corner of Wellesley Street and James LL Burrell Avenue. It was not clear how much money was taken.

The victim was beaten, pushed to the ground and shot once in the right leg.

Police are asking anyone with information about the assault to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
