The Town of North Hempstead, which has been considering seizing the Roslyn Country Club, might instead buy most of the 10-acre property for $2 million, renovate the pool and open a new town park on the site, according to town officials.

The Roslyn Heights club, in the heart of a 668-home Levitt & Sons Inc. development, was open for decades to resident members. Its pool and tennis courts have been closed for several years, while a catering hall remains open.

At a meeting of the Roslyn Country Club Civic Association on Monday night, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilman Tom Dwyer, who represents the area, showed residents a sketch of proposed renovations and an aerial photograph showing how the land would be divided between the town and the current property owner, Manouchehr "Manny" Malekan.

Malekan would retain more than 2 acres, including the catering hall, Kaiman said. Malekan did not return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

Kaiman said in an interview that the project would cost about $7 million to build. He said the $2 million for the property purchase would come out of a town environmental legacy fund.

Annual membership fees for the park and pool would be about $800 to $1,000, Kaiman said. Any town resident could become a member.

The exclusive rights of the 668 homeowners to belong to the country club -- a point of contention and litigation over the years -- would be eliminated as part of the deal, Kaiman said.

The supervisor said he hoped to work out the final details within the next few months and that after town board and other approvals, the park could open as early as next year.
