Sunny, pleasant Labor Day weekend expected

If you're trying to revel in the last holiday of summer, don't worry: Mother Nature won't get in the way.

The heaviest of the upcoming rain days isn't expected until Tuesday, leaving the rest of the Labor Day weekend sunny and pleasant, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

Sunday's weather will be cooler than the preceding days, with highs in the mid- to upper-70s across much of Long Island, meteorologist Joey Picca said. Lows on Sunday will be in the low to mid-60s.

On Monday, Labor Day, expect the same pleasant temperatures, with highs in the mid- to upper-70s and lows in the 60s across the Island. There is a slight chance of rain on Monday, Picca said, but the real precipitation likely won't come until Tuesday.

An approaching storm system scheduled to hit on Tuesday will bring as much as an inch of rain or more to Long Island, with areas of heavy rain possible, Picca said. Highs on Tuesday will be in the 70s, with lows in the upper 60s.

The chance for rain will slowly diminish on Wednesday, Picca said, and temperatures will begin to rise. Highs on Wednesday will be in the low 80s, with lows in the upper 60s and mid-70s.

Thursday will be warmer still, with highs in the low to mid-80s, and lows in the mid- to upper-60s, while Friday's temperatures will be right around 80, Picca said.
