Stewart Manor man charged with DWI after 3-car crash with 3 kids in backseat, cops say
A Stewart Manor man whose pickup truck was involved in a three-vehicle crash Saturday night in New Hyde Park has been charged with driving while intoxicated with three children in the backseat, Nassau police said.
Timothy McAleavey, 52, pleaded not guilty Sunday, and his bail was set at $4,000 bond or $2,000 cash. Neither had been posted Sunday night, according to court records.
McAleavey is charged with three counts of aggravated driving intoxicated under Leandra's Law; three counts of endangering the welfare of a child; driving while intoxicated; excessive tinted windows; and three counts of having rear passengers under the age of 4 unrestrained in the vehicle.
He is scheduled for a hearing on July 8 at First District Court in Hempstead, according to records.
Nassau County police said that about 10:45 p.m. McAleavey, of 40 Stewart Ave., was unsteady on his feet with glassy eyes and had slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath when authorities were called to the scene of a three-car accident at Covert and 11th avenues.
There were no injuries, and McAleavey was arrested at the scene.
Three children -- ages 1, 2 and 4, who are not related to McAleavey -- were seated in the rear of his 2003 Ford pickup, police said.
The children were released to their mother, who was also a passenger in the pickup.
