It was, in the words of a Nassau police spokeswoman, a "one-car, one-pole, into-the-darkness-of-night kind of thing."

Somebody ran a vehicle off North Jerusalem Road at Hoover Street in East Meadow, snapping a utility pole in half, damaging a fire hydrant and a fence before fleeing.

The damage was called in at 6:19 a.m. Sunday. When officers responded later in the morning, they found the bottom half of the pole on the ground and the top half still suspended by utility lines.

"I would think, if you're hitting that many things, there's probably a car out there with some kind of damage," the police spokeswoman said.

A LIPA spokeswoman said she needed to look into the matter before commenting.
