Water has been restored for nine Lynbrook residents on Putnam Avenue after a a 24-inch pipe broke late Tuesday night, flooding nearby streets, officials said.

Other customers were also temporarily affected because the damaged line caused the water pressure to drop, New York American Water spokesman Lee Mueller said by email. He did not say how many homes were affected or what time water service was restored Wednesday.

The Lynbrook police said they received calls from numerous residents.

The water pressure returned to normal about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mueller said, adding that the broken section of the pipe must be replaced.

The utility delivered water to the nine customers to tide them over until crews made the repairs, Mueller said.

"We apologize for the inconvenience during this challenging time for our communities," he said.
