Way to Go: Cory Levy

A Seaford High School sophomore's plan to construct a gazebo in memory of a federal agent led to his participation over the summer in the FBI Teen Academy in Manhattan.

Cory Levy, 15, plans to build a wooden gazebo next year at Washington Avenue Park in Seaford in the name of John F. Capano, an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The project is part of Levy's effort to attain his Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of Troop 239.

Capano, 51, of Massapequa, died as he tried to detain an armed man who was trying to rob a Seaford pharmacy on New Year's Eve in 2011. As Capano fought with the suspected robber outside the store, a retired Nassau police lieutenant mistook him for the robber and fatally shot him. A subsequent report by the Nassau County district attorney's office concluded that criminal charges against the retired lieutenant were unwarranted.

He was posthumously awarded the ATF Medal of Valor and the Federal Law Enforcement Congressional Badge

of Bravery.

"I'm really honored to do this," Levy said. "We want to make it a beautiful spot, with flowers and a plaque that bears his personal shield."

Long Island ATF agent Eric Immesberger recommended Levy, who wants to pursue a career in forensics. Levy joined about 120 teens from across the nation at the weeklong summer academy and learned about every division and subdivision of the FBI, including the bomb squad, scuba and SWAT teams.
