Woman arrested on weapons charge after report of gunshots in Freeport
A Hempstead woman was arrested early Sunday on a weapons-possession charge by Freeport Village police, Nassau County police said.
Freeport Village police officers received a report of shots fired on Leonard Avenue about 1:40 a.m., Nassau police said.
When Freeport police arrived, they saw a gold four-door Saturn sedan driving up and down the block suspiciously, police said.
A Freeport officer stopped the car, which had a broken taillight, on Independence Avenue after the driver made an illegal U-turn, police said.
Police arrested the driver, Sharema Fields, 20, and charged her with criminal possession of a firearm. Fields also received several traffic summonses.
Nassau police said it was not determined whether the weapon Fields had was involved in the report of shots fired. No injuries were reported from that incident.
At her arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead, Fields was ordered held on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond. She is due back in court Wednesday.
