Pedestrian Carlos Villafane, of Mastic Beach, killed in crash on Sunrise Highway in Blue Point, police say
A pedestrian was killed Saturday evening while walking on Sunrise Highway in Blue Point after being struck by a Mustang driver, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The victim, Carlos Villafane, 69, of Mastic Beach, was with two others and walking in the center lane when he was struck by the Mustang driver, Adam Polis, 36, who was driving east and had swerved to avoid the group, police wrote in a news release. The others were unhurt, the release said.
The crash was west of Waverly Avenue, at about 8:35 p.m.
The department's press office said in response to emailed questions that there is no sidewalk on that part of Sunrise Highway and that the crash is under investigation.
The office said Villafane's position in the roadway was determined by witness accounts.
The driver and the victim's family could not be immediately reached for comment.
