Blakeman's wife leaves county job

The new bride of Republican Hempstead Town Board member Bruce Blakeman abruptly quit her job as a $112,000-year counsel in Nassau County's housing department six days after the couple's posh wedding in Southampton, sparking speculation among county workers as to why.

"Segal Magori Blakeman resigned yesterday," John Sarcone, director of Housing and Community Development, said in a statement Thursday after Newsday inquired about her job status.

County Executive Edward Mangano and his wife, as well as Nassau Republican chairman Joseph Mondello and his wife, attended the Magori-Blakeman wedding May 14 and the following reception at 75 Main, a popular Southampton restaurant. There was no talk at that time, some guests say, about the bride leaving the position she had held since Dec. 30, 2013.

"We got married and we have a nice future planned, " said Blakeman, reached on his honeymoon and asked about his wife's departure. "It was the right time," he said.

Blakeman proposed to Magori last summer in Israel while he was campaigning for the U.S. Congressional seat vacated by Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) and won by Democrat Kathleen Rice of Garden City. He tweeted photos of his proposal.

Blakeman was divorced from Nancy Shevell, who is now married to former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.
