NewsdayTV wanted to bring you a debate or one-on-one with GOP incumbent Anthony D'Esposito and Democratic challenger Laura Gillen. Gillen declined and D'Esposito backed out after agreeing to an interview.

ISSUES

  • D’Esposito said he deserves a second term after delivering more than $30 million in federal funds to projects in the district, helping law enforcement, fire districts and the library systems.
  • He said he supported the H.R. 2 border security legislation that passed without any Democratic support in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. The bill makes it harder for undocumented immigrants to claim asylum and required employers to verify the immigration status of their employees. He is opposed to New York City’s sanctuary city status.
  • D’Esposito said he is against a national abortion ban and would work to restore the State and Local Tax deduction known as SALT, which was capped at $10,000 as part of a 2017 law signed by then-President Donald Trump.
