BACKGROUND

  • Gooding, 78, of Shelter Island Heights, narrowly lost the race for town supervisor in November. He won a June primary for an open council seat as he seeks to join two Democratic running mates elected last November to the town board on a platform of “A Better Island for All.”
  • He is chairman of the town’s Community Preservation Fund advisory committee.
  • Gooding is retired from a building materials and construction systems company.

ISSUES

  • Gooding said protecting drinking water, bays and creeks is one of his three top priorities. He said he supports measures to allow residents access to innovative/alternative septic systems.
  • He said he hopes his background in construction can help the town develop more affordable housing “quickly and cost effectively,” while adding that he wants “smart development” on Long Island.
  • Gooding said he hopes to bring more expertise to town government through positions such as a town planner.
