BACKGROUND

  • Lavine, 77, of Glen Cove, is running on the Democratic Party line in the general election. He is seeking reelection to the seat he has held for 19 years.
  • He is chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and is president of the New York chapter of the National Association of Jewish Legislators. He is on the group’s national board.
  • Lavine earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a law degree from New York Law School. 

ISSUES

  • Lavine said there is a need to ensure the state provides “the funding that is necessary for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to function” after the postponement of the congestion pricing plan.
  • He said leveraging state Environmental Bond Act funding to protect Long Island’s coastlines is a priority, adding that “there is a real danger of saltwater infiltration.”
  • Lavine said experience will be needed to assess and implement an upcoming Rockefeller Institute evaluation of the formula that drives dollars to the state’s school districts.
