Robert Zimmerman, a Democratic national committeeman and public relations executive from Great Neck, was nominated Wednesday by President Barack Obama to be a member of the National Council on the Humanities.

The Senate must confirm Zimmerman for a six-year term as one of 26 board members of the council, which advises the National Endowment for the Humanities and the $146 million in Congressional appropriations for investment in cultural programs.

Zimmerman declined to comment.

Zimmerman often appears on CNN, MSNBC and other cable shows to discuss politics. He also has served on other culture-related boards, including the board of the American Museum of Natural History. He is also a major contributor and fundraiser for Democrats.

Zimmerman, 60, is a partner in Zimmerman/Edelson and a member of the board for the Center for an Urban Future in Manhattan. He has been a member of the Democratic National Committee for 15 years.
